Rock Salt Grit - Brown Salt - 25kg bag
From the Belfast Lough Salt Mines
Our Rock Salt Grit is a brown salt that is mined locally at the Carrickfergus Mines on the edge of the Belfast Lough. It is naturally brown in colour and contains a fine grit (or 'marl' - this is a sediment which comes from the sand stone from which the salt is mined) which provides better grip under-foot and under the wheels of cars.
This is an industry standard salt as used by the Roads Service and conforms to BS 3247. Salt contains an anti-caking agent to prevent clumping.
Brown rock salt grit is ideal for de-icing areas where traction is more important than cleanliness such as :
- Access roads, highways and other roads for vehicular traffic
- Car parks and commercial and industrial yards
Using salt on concrete and tarmac
All salts are corrosive to metals and can cause 'spalling' on concrete. Salt does not cause any chemical damage to tarmac but can damage the underlying layers whilst the freeze-thaw cycle can be exacerbate damage especially to newly laid tarmac. The grit can also have an abrasive effect on road surfaces while it does have the benefit of providing extra grip and traction under wheels and underfoot. For better protection of concrete, tarmac and/or metals consider using a Calcium Chloride de-icer such as exoTHAW or liquid de-icer such as Isomex3.
How to use Rock Salt Grit
Rock salt grit can be spread before frost, ice or snow to help prevent slippery surfaces. salt can also be spread after ice and frost have formed to melt and make surfaces safe. Spreading on top of fresh or compacted snow will provide better traction under foot and under wheeled traffic.
Dispersal rate for de-icing salt (Sodium Chloride salt) of between 6-15g per square foot (65-160g per square metre) depending on conditions.
